Yassin (The Narcicyst) - HIP HOP ARTIST - MONTREAL

With his large baseball cap, half-open shirt and round glasses, Yassin Alsalman looks a little bit like Spike Lee. You could say he also has the American director’s verve.

Iraqi by heritage, the rapper known as The Narcicyst was born in Dubai in 1982 and emigrated to Canada with his parents five years later. He returned to live in the United Arab Emirates from 1994 to 2000, before coming back to Montreal.

He began writing lyrics at the age of 13 or 14, but immersed himself more fully in music upon his return to Montreal. He was a member of the music collective Euphrates before embarking on a solo career. He has 10 albums to his credit and is currently producing his eleventh, for which we joined him in the studio.

In addition to his music career, Yassin has a master’s degree in media studies from Concordia University, and teaches a course about the history of hip hop at Concordia.

The Narcicyst – Hamdulillah

For this video, Yassin called on a dozen photographers around the world to "create a portrait of the new global citizens."

The Narcicyst – P.H.A.T.W.A.

This provocative song tells a fictional story of Yassin being arrested at an airport.

September 11th in one sentence

Yassin remembers where he was on the day of the attacks, and contemplates where, as a society, we are today.
