Syed - IMAM - CALGARY

No stranger to the media, Syed Soharwardy was one of the first Muslim commentators to be interviewed on CBC on Sept. 11, 2001. While the imam has been a long-time champion of pacifism and interfaith dialogue, the event prompted him to redouble his efforts — among other things, he co-signed a fatwa against terrorism in 2010.

Born in Pakistan, the son of a Karachi imam, Syed was steeped in religion from an early age. A follower of Sufi Islam, he emigrated to Canada in 1995 and established the Al Madinah Islamic Centre in Calgary.

A family man with two children, he combines his religious life with a full-time job as an engineer, having earned master’s degrees from the New Jersey Institute of Technology as well as the University of Calgary.

Friday prayer in an underground parking garage

Currently lacking the space to accommodate his congregation, Imam Soharwardy rents an underground parking garage for Friday prayers, the highlight of the week for Muslims. It is a temporary solution until work can be completed on a brand new mosque, a multi-million-dollar job that requires donations from the community.

Islam, a closer look

Frederic Castel, a researcher in religious studies at the University of Quebec at Montreal and an observer of Islam's rise in Canada, explains the main branches of Islam: Sunni, Shia and Sufi.

Radicalism in Canada

Farzana Hassan, a past president of the Canadian Muslim Congress and author of Prophecy and the Fundamentalist Quest, talks about Muslim radicalism post 9/11, and the continuing influence of Islamist writers like Sayyid Qutb, Hassan al-Banna and Syed Abul A’ala Maududi.

The trouble with integrating sharia law in Canada

Saeed Rahnema, a professor of political science at York University and frequent commentator on the Middle East, discusses the attempts to institute sharia law to settle civil disputes in Canada, and the divergent versions of sharia that exist between the various sects of Islam.

September 11th in one sentence

Syed remembers where he was on the day of the attacks, and contemplates where, as a society, we are today.
